The name Town 1770 was derived from the year when Captain Cook stepped along the shores of the town in 1770. Meanwhile, the moniker Agnes Water is believed to have had two origins. The first one is that it was named after Agnes, the daughter of Daniel and Rachel Clowes who were the first European settlers here.
